Virtual Coffee Date

Good morning! It feels like ages since I (~M~) have posted anything… and I have a good reason! Our internet has been down all week and after much ado, we have finally figured out the problem and are back in full swing. What a headache! Honestly, I have so much respect for people who understand technical computer-y things, because it is a Pandora’s box to me. Example:

“I’m calling because our Internet has been down the past few days and we are not sure why…”

“Ok, we can help with that. Can you check to make sure all the cables are plugged into your router?”

“Sure!…. Um… which one is the router?”

Yup. No hope for me. Anyways, 8 phone calls, 1 trip to the Internet store, and an hour and a half of reconfiguring our network later, we are back in business!!

Seeing as it’s been a while… I was thinking to myself- when I haven’t seen a friend in a while and we need to catch up, I usually suggest a coffee date! So, why not have ourselves a little virtual coffee date? Grab a mug of joe and let’s catch up!

If we were having coffee this morning, I would tell you that I have spent the past few days thoroughly enjoying a new little hobby I’ve started! I’ve been working less lately and been trying to stay as busy as possibly to take my attention away from just waiting for this baby to be ready to come out. I found this tutorial on Pinterest for how to make boutique style burp cloths and it is SO fun! I can’t wait to send some out to some unsuspecting pregnant ladies I know- hopefully they like them as much as I do!

If we were having coffee this morning, I’d also be treating myself to a fully caffeinated coffee drink. Because it’s a special occasion. I’d also tell you that I FINALLY got frozen yogurt yesterday!!! And a pedicure. It was a special occasion- hanging out with one of my dear friends who is also pregnant!!

I’d also be excited to tell you that our nursery is pretty much finished!! It was such a fun project and we are just missing one vital piece now…. our baby. I just love how the room turned out- the walls are neutral, and we have pops of color everywhere that are just happy! My favorite thing about the room so far is the chair… I may or may not spend a little of each morning reading my devotions in that huge overstuffed chair.

If we were having coffee this morning, I’d tell you about a new challenge I’m setting for myself. It’s driving me a little bonkers to not be working as much, since I’m used to contributing to our finances and being busy. Now that I’m not bringing in as much financially, I want to make some changes and be as frugal as possible! I always loved the idea of Dave Ramsey’s envelope budgeting system, but never really cracked down and challenged myself to adhere to it. Katy, the adorable gal you see in the froyo pic, said she’s doing it and loves it!  So, here goes- i think my biggest challenge will be in the grocery department. I am the number one offender at picking up 10 different food items when I only needed one. Hopefully this works! How do you guys budget?

Well, my coffee is almost cold now. Time for a second cup!

The Thornbirds (Colleen McCullough)

Even though this is my ‘new copy’, the back cover is missing….

This is another one of my favorite books that I just read recently- for probably the 22nd time. My friend Jess gave this copy to my for my birthday a couple years ago.

She got a new copy because she saw my tattered hand-me-down one falling apart on my bedside table. It looked pretty rough. There may have been an entire roll of tape involved. I remember her making fun of me for keeping such an old, messed-up book….and then getting me a new copy 🙂 Such a good friend.

This is kind of a throwback book by McCullough, I’ve checked out some of her other books and there are none that have really caught me like this one- Before this she has written a lot of books based in Rome, B.C., so this is a totally different era for her.  It’s another one that spans over many years and follows three main characters. It’s starts in New Zealand and follows the Cleary family to Australia where a new and better life awaits them. It really is a beautiful story- a romance mainly- but there is illicit love, a little bit of politics (not much, or I’d be completely bored), family secrets, and every day struggles. Fiona (Fee), Meggie, and Justine are the three protagonists- mother, daughter, and granddaughter. Throughout the book Meggie grows up and later discovers how some of her mother’s choices mirror her own and eventually alter her relationship with her own daughter. There is a T.V series that was done in the 80’s and I could not get into it. They stuck to the book really well for the most part but I think it really bugged me that Meggie didn’t have ‘titian hair’ in it. Sounds kind of lame saying it out loud (or would that be ‘on internet’?) but it’s true. If I remember correctly, she had black hair on the show. Brown is at least close, but black? C’mon. So I don’t recommend watching the show, but that’s just my inability to adapt to other people’s perception of what titian hair looks like.

Like our nicknames? Mine’s eitak….:)

This is a good, meaty (as in, not fluffy) novel that goes really well with a cup of coffee and followed with some Momma/Sister/Daughter time….Speaking of which, I believe M. and I are due for some hangout time at WholeFoods….

In the words of my baby sister, ‘I remember the first time I read the Thornbirds….it was magical. Magical.’

Today, I am a happy lil camper because:

1.) It’s Friday!! and…I have the whole weekend off! Being a nurse, I am not usually so lucky, so my mind is going a million miles an hour thinking of all the things I want to do!

2.) Its NATIONAL DAIRY MONTH!! Did you guys know that? As you can see, I am fully prepared.

3.) Its my Grandpa-in-law’s birthday celebration on Sunday. I think I’ll bake him something extra special. Not sure what yet, but I have a few ideas floating around in my head. Any suggestions?

4.) I am feeling extra joyful today! I had a long- awaited Skype date last night with one of my dear roommates from college, who now lives in Canada! It was so fun to hear how different things are there- and such a great growing experience for her & her husband to be in a place so far from home. I’m just thankful she and I are on the same coast! Plus, she’s a dairy girl- and told me that dairy products are about 25% more expensive there, major bummer. I’ll drink an extra glass of milk for her today. And maybe have some extra ice cream too. All for you, Amanda!

A mug of milk for Amanda- it might be her mug too! Oops.

5.) Friends are wonderful. Cherish the ones that you have, and tell them you love them! Whether new or old, near or far, I am just so thankful for every single one of them. Go hug yours. And I’ll hug mine. God is good!

6.) I’m going on a date with my husband tonight. I LOVE dates with my husband.

7.) I think I’ll take my pups on an extra walk this weekend. I have not always loved dogs like I do now- ask my mom. (Champ, R.I.P.) just kidding, he didn’t die. But if he had stayed with me much longer, things weren’t looking so good. Now I have 3 German shepherds, and until I have children of my own, I shall continue to treat them as if they are my babies. I’m hoping my kiddos don’t have issues with chasing cars and hip dysplasia, though.

tug of war- Jaz doesn’t like this game like these two do.

8.) Why did I do this to myself?

9.) I made about 4 billion meatballs last night to freeze for future meals. Joey loves these meatballs, and I feel accomplished by making meals ahead of time. Win-win.

10.) I love that it gets so light so early in the morning- I am an early riser, most always. I try to get my exercise in the mornings, it always revs up my body to tackle the rest of the day. Also, I’m getting better at reading the Bible in the mornings. Even on my days off, I want to wake up as early as possible to enjoy every minute of free time. (Admittedly, there are exceptions to this)

ENJOY your weekend, eat some ice cream, thank a dairyman, and hug your friends.
